MSTRKRFT!!

Aaargh.

Mstrkrft, Felix Cartal, and some dj’s who were bad but no one noticed and whose namesĀ  I cannot find. Firstly, I’ve had a rough little while and dancing for five hours straight to complete geniuses was a perfect remedy. It also did not hurt that Jesse (love love love. Why can’t I find a nice mustachoed musician of my very own?) kept pointing at me and making ‘I’m watching you gestures’, then said “oh there’s so many pretty girls in the audience and pointed me out again. I’m not narcissistic, I’m a poor girl gloating over a fresh muffin.

Sidetracked by vanity. Sorry. I really wish I could find these names, the first dj was fine, the second was bad. Really bad. And kind of annoying. But no one notices! I could have done better with some beat matching software. And he had turntables but hardly used them. And he played a ‘remix’ of Beck’s “Sex Lies,” but it wasn’t a remix at all, he was just playing Sex Lies. Don’t get me wrong, Beck’s great, but really? try doing something interesting. And it wasn’t near loud enough. Poor, brilliant, dazzling, wonderful Felix comes on and turns it up to the proper volume and everyone’s holding their ears. “Yeah, they’re bad but as long as there’s lights flashing and some sort of repetitive beat in the background no one cares.” I don’t see why no one can seem to differentiate between a bad DJ and a good DJ. Felix is brilliant, this is something I was unfortunately unaware of before tonight. Very aggressive Sebastianesque feel. I know everyone but me is familiar with him but he’s apparently vastly underappreciated. I didn’t think Mstrkrft could possibly top that but then of course they did. It’s a shame their emotion can’t translate to their recorded releases. That stuff’s all kind of light and bouncy but they are HEAVY and grinding and devastating and perfect live (partially my first time jitters, I guess). Also closed with a delightful remix of Bohemian Rhapsody, an absolutely monstrous way to squeeze the last jumps out of our poor overdanced feet.

It was interesting to see this kind of thing in a large, historic, big brand venue. It was very encouraging to see their crowd treat them with the enthusiasm and relentless dancing that they deserved. Mostly a younger crowd (16-17s), which is really great because I feel all hope for fun shows lies in them now. We (20-23 somethings) were always pretentious assoles that would rather sit back and look cool and sip their PBR than dance like we’re supposed to. This is much better than Chicago though, good riddance. Perfect perfect show, I think I pulled a muscle in my thigh. Interesting that I could never run less than a 15 minute mile in high school gym but I can dance, bouncing up and down for five straight hours. Love.
